A Winter Engagement Session in Juneau, Alaska

If you’re dreaming of a winter wonderland for your engagement session, look no further than Juneau, Alaska. Juneau is utterly amazing in so many ways. Picture this: snowflakes falling gently around you, snow-capped mountains towering in the distance, frosty pines muffling the sounds of your footsteps in the snow, and the serene silence of rugged nature. It’s a cozy backdrop for love.

Why Juneau?

Juneau isn’t your typical engagement photo spot. Nestled between the mountains and the sea, it’s the perfect mix of raw beauty and adventure. While many people flock to the mountains of the continental US in the summer or tropical destinations for their engagement sessions, there’s something undeniably special about the icy charm of Alaska in the winter months. And the best part? Juneau is less crowded than many other popular locations, giving you the chance for more intimate, private photos in nature. A winter engagement will ensure the least amount of tourist crowding and give you near complete privacy for your session.

The Best Time for a Winter Engagement Session in Juneau

Winter in Juneau usually runs from November through March, but it’s especially magical in December and January when the snow is at its peak. You’ll get to capture the essence of winter in all its glory: snow-covered trees, frozen lakes, and even the occasional moose wandering through the frame. We got to see a humpback whale spout, sea otters, and bald eagles during this particular session! The whole day felt like it truly encapsulated the real Alaska feel. One thing about Juneau is that it is one of the southernmost cities in the state, which means it is warmer than most places you’ll end up visiting in Alaska.

Where to Go for Your Session

  1. Mendenhall Glacier
This is one of Juneau’s most iconic spots, and for good reason! The glacier’s massive ice formations and surrounding forests make for jaw-dropping backdrops. Whether you want to shoot in front of the icy blue face of the glacier or amongst the snow-covered trees nearby, it’s a stunning choice for any couple. There’s several overlook areas on the roads leading up to the Glacier. And if you have sno spikes, then you can actually hike up to the glacier itself!
  2. The Treadwell Mine
For a touch of history mixed with nature, head to the Treadwell Mine Historic Park. It’s a little off the beaten path but offers a cool, eerie atmosphere, perfect for couples who want something a bit more unique. The old mine shafts and surrounding landscape look incredible in photos, especially when dusted with snow.
  3. Mount Roberts Tramway
If you want to get an epic view of Juneau, hop on the Mount Roberts Tramway. Once you reach the top, the panoramic views of the city, the coast, and the mountains are jaw-dropping. You can get shots in the snow with the city and ocean below, or hike a little further to capture some intimate moments on the rugged trails. This spot is all about that dramatic, sweeping landscape.
  4. Downtown Juneau
Don’t sleep on the charm of downtown Juneau! The cozy streets, historic buildings, and the harbor make for a beautiful urban winter backdrop. You can mix it up by getting some shots with twinkling lights, cute coffee shops, or even a cute pub to warm up in after the shoot. We went to The Whale Project while we were walking through town, another iconic spot you can’t miss.
  5. False Outer Point
The beaches of Juneau can’t be skipped!! I loved exploring the rock formations amongst the beach here, as well as the neighboring forest. This is a great place to watch for wildlife as well.

Preparing For Your Session

What to Wear

When you’re taking photos in the Alaskan winter, comfort and warmth are key! Layering is essential. Think cozy sweaters, stylish jackets, scarves, and gloves. And don’t forget about footwear — make sure your shoes are warm and practical for snow and ice. If you want to add a pop of color or something special, go for a bold-colored jacket or scarf. If you’re more into neutral tones, earth tones always look amazing against snowy backdrops and I love recommending neutrals.

How to Prepare for the Cold

Okay, let’s be real — it’s Alaska. It’s going to be cold. But with a little prep, you can still enjoy the day. Bring extra layers for when you’re not shooting, like thermals or a down jacket to put on between shots. I love shooting at multiple locations, so there’s also the option of keeping the car warm as we run between the different landscapes of Juneau. Hot drinks in a thermos (tea or cocoa are perfect!) will help keep you warm and it’s something I always try to bring for my couples. You can also make it a part of your photos — a shot of you sipping cocoa or cuddling together under a blanket adds to the cozy vibe.

Also, don’t forget to check the weather forecast. Alaskan weather can be unpredictable, so it’s always good to be prepared for snow or rain. If you aren’t a local, definitely plan some buffer time for your flight in. I myself got delayed for several days trying to get into Juneau and spent a few nights sleeping in the Sea-Tac airport as I waited for the winter storms to chill out!

The Best Part: The Magic of Winter in Juneau

Engagement photos are all about capturing your love in a way that feels authentic and true to you. And if you love the idea of getting out in the snow and celebrating your big moment in the beauty of nature, Juneau is the place to do it.

So, if you’re ready for adventure and a stunning winter wonderland, pack your warmest clothes, grab your partner, and head to Juneau for a sick engagement session of new memories. Whether you’re dancing in the snow or cuddling up by a fire, it’s going to be nothing short of amazing.
